Chinese zodiac streets in Yunnan
云南十二生肖街
2017 is the year of the rooster according to the Chinese zodiac calendar. Going to street fairs is a must-do during lunar January in Yunnan. When traveling in Yunnan, it is easy to spot Chinese zodiac streets with special names such as Majie Street (“Horse Street”), Niujie Street (“Ox Street”), Longjie Street (“Dragon Street”) etc.
根据中国民俗文化十二生肖的推演，2017 是鸡年。正月，正是人们结伴赶街的热闹时候。行走于云南的村镇街巷，总能见到很多以“鼠街”“牛街”“马街”“龙街”等以生肖命名的地方。

最美丽的水鸟
Wang Ying, a bird lover, was deeply impressed by the gorgeous image of a purple swamp hen when first saw one. “With bright red beak that is short and vertically flat, purple-blue plumage, blue-green wing and breasts feathers and white feathers concealed at the tail, purple swamp hen is so beautiful.” Wang Ying said. In fact, they have long been praised as “the most beautiful waterfowl in the world”.
鸟类爱好者王英第一次看到紫水鸡，就被它美丽的身影深深打动。“鲜红色的嘴短而侧扁，羽多为紫色或蓝色，翅膀和胸为蓝绿色，尾下覆羽白色，太漂亮了。事实上，紫水鸡很早之前就被称为“世界上最美丽的水鸟”。

Sun Hongyan——Pioneer of Yunnan-style Inside painting
孙鸿雁 开创滇派内画
Sun Hongyan, the youngest master of Chinese Inside painting, painting in reverse with a brush inside a transparent vessel, traveled alone from Shandong to Kunming in the 90s. After seeing crowds of elderly singing and dancing on the square in front of the Culture Palace, and feasting on rice noodles for 8 cents per portion, she finally settled down. Inside painting requires reversed painting, and Sun Hongyan has lived her life against the mainstream.
孙鸿雁，最年轻的中国内画大师，上世纪90 年代从山东只身而来，眼见过“老工人文化宫前的广场上很多老人在唱歌跳舞”，吃过8毛钱一碗的米线，最终得以在昆明安身立命。她的内画需要反向作画，对于人生，她说：“要逆道而行。”

Yunnan Wadang
云南瓦当
Wadang, or eave tiles, need to be put in place. These tiles, with hanging edges and decorated circular portions, are used to close off the ends of rows of imbrex. As imbrex are laid successively serving as guards or stops, arranged in rows from roof ridge to the end eaves right above them, to prevent the imbrex from slipping down. In ancient Chinese, Dang means “bottom”, but these tiles are also referred to as “Wadang” or “Watou”. In Yunnan, a more straightforward terminology is used: “Goutou”, or ‘end of ditch’.
所谓“瓦当”是指一路筒瓦由上而下，最前边的、封面下垂、有纹饰的圆形部分，即筒瓦一块压一块、从屋脊一直排列到屋檐端口、各条瓦沟最前端的构件，处在众瓦之底，是筒瓦的挡头，其作用之一是使上面的筒瓦不会脱落下来。古语中“当”有“底部”之意，民间也有人把瓦当称为“瓦挡”或“瓦头”，云南人对它有更直白的称呼，叫做“沟头”。

The prints displayed in Yunnan Art Gallery consist of two half-opened doors, outside which are mountains, ponds, flower, leaves, villages, etc., occasionally ‘come inside’ by floating through the opening door. The displacement of space enchantingly creates a dreamlike world to the viewers.
云南美术馆内，一幅幅陈列着的版画，以两扇半掩着的门为符号，只见山岭、花枝、秋叶、村寨、荷塘等，或冲开或延伸进来，飘然入“门内”。里外之间，空间错位，如梦如幻。

Nixi Black Pottery — Pottery with a thousand-year history
尼西黑陶 传承千年
Nixi means “where the sun rises” in Tibetan language. Tangdui Village, a Tibetan villagein Nixi Township of Shangri-La City, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan,was once a mandatory stop on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Nixi is also a place that has preserved the traditional skills, passed down over thousands of years, of “Nixi Black pottery”, a style of pottery recognized as an intangible national cultural heritage.
尼西，在藏语中意为“太阳升起的地方”。尼西乡汤堆村，是云南省香格里拉市的一个藏族村，也是旧时茶马古道的必经之路。国家级非物质文化遗产“尼西黑陶”的烧制技艺在这里传承千年。

Tonghai cooking pot from the Yuan Dynasty Barracks
通海炊锅 元朝军营智慧
Tonghai Cooking Pot has a history dating back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271—1368), when the Mongolian army led by Kublai Khan during his punitive expedition to Yunnan was in juncture with starvation. A smart cook boiled sliced mutton using his helmet as a pot and presented the dish to Kublai Khan. After that, instant-boiled mutton became a favorite for troops stationed at Qutuo Pass, and the deft craftsmen in Tonghai created copper pots that mimic the style of Mongolian Army helmets.
通海炊锅的历史要追溯到元朝。当时，忽必烈大军征讨云南，路上饥饿，军情紧急，机灵的厨子把羊肉切成薄片，用头盔做锅，在滚汤里一涮，呈给忽必烈食用。屯兵曲陀关时，因常吃涮羊肉，通海的能工巧匠便仿照当时蒙古大军头盔的样子做了铜锅。
